Equipment

Equipment

We thought we would struggle to get the instruments we needed for our video as none of us are in a band. However, after hunting down where we could find the instruments we have managed to find the instruments we need for our music video. For the keyboard we need I have contacted my cousin who has three keyboards. She has let me borrow one of her older keyboards as it will look more retro and more fitting for our video. For the bass guitar we have managed to persuade one of our friends to let us borrow his bass guitar for the day we are filming. For the guitar, luckily Tarun in our group owns an electric guitar that will be a perfect fit for our video. Finally, for the drums, we are borrowing the schools drum set for our video.

Lyrics to our song

You're up and you'll get down
You never running from this town

Kinda think you said
You'll never get anything better than this

'Cause you're going round in circles
And everyone knows you're trouble

Cause you read it in a big book
And now you giving me the look look
But just remember how we shook shook
And all the things we took took

This town's the oldest friend of mine

Get up and we get down
We're always running round this town

And to think I said
We'd never make anything better than this

'Cause we're always in small circles
And everyone thinks we're trouble

We didn't read it in the big book
And now we're giving you the look look
Just remember how we shook shook
And all the things we took took

This town... This town...
This town's the oldest friend of mine
This town... This town... This town...

Study Of A Director

Aitor Throup and the rock group Kasabian first met in Paris in the summer of 2010. The band, (formed in Leicester in 1997) and the designer were both invited to the French capital by Umbro, for an event to mark the reveal and launch of Throup’s England Away kit. Throup was already an admirer of the group’s music and approach, with their roots and understanding of tradition as prominent as their forward-thinking and at times experimental output. He instantly clicked with its members at the event, where all agreed to meet up again as soon as their schedules permitted. Over the course of the following autumn, the band and the designer met up repeatedly, and Kasabian’s songwriter and guitarist Sergio Pizzorno and Throup started plotting an approach to combine powerful visuals with the band’s following album (Velociraptor!).

Aitor Throup is in association with the band Kasabisan. He has directed some of their music videos such as 'eez-eh' and 'Switchblade Smiles', story boards them and also designs their art work for things such as posters and CD covers as he designed the 'Velociraptor!' album cover. We like the style of his ideas as they are sort of similar to ours and the band is also within the genre of our music video.

His most recent video that he directed is 'eez-eh' by Kasabian which involves the band in a studio for part of it and then in a ware house in another. We have taken part inspiration from this as it has two settings and because one is being a studio and another is a different dynamic place it is quite a similar style we are going for.

Location ideas

At first we had decided to shoot our video at a lake but due to health and safety reasons we will not be shooting our video at a lake. We want to shoot most of our video in a studio so that it gives it that professional look. Also the studio will be simple yet effective with the song we have chosen, it will help amplify the music. Using a studio will allow us shoot the video with more ease as we can get the lighting right. For a small part of our video we want to use a different location, we were thinking of something like the countryside. The reason for having a different location is to add a different element to our video.

Reflection - 15/9/14

Reflection on work so far.

Reflecting on the work we have done so far over the last couple of weeks we have learnt a lot about working together and as a team. This is because after the first week of work we got some bad comments on our work about lack of work distributed between the group and also poor quality of work we had produced. So, we looked back on this together as a group the next week and really thought about what we needed to do to get back on track. We started to distribute the work evenly between us all to ensure that our blog will show that we have all contributed a good amount of work between us. We learned also that doing different tasks at the same time allows us to get a lot more work done at one time with  a lot more blog posts daily and a higher quality of work between us to get the best possible grade.

After looking at a lot of different music videos there are a lot of different ideas we think we could use for our own music video. We learned that the music video does not have to have a lot in it and to be over the top to be affective. We found that just having a simple setting in a place like a studio to amplify the artists can just be as affective as an illustration or a lot happening on the screen at once. Amplifying the artists and their instruments is much more affective than an illustrative video if the main aim is to show of the music and the talent of the artists instead of telling a story behind the lyrics. So, as a result of this we have decided to go for a simple yet affective setting in a place like a studio to go for an amplification of the music. This idea has come from a lot of music videos that we have watched but mainly from the music video of the song we are doing 'The Look' by Metronomy.

After looking at other music videos we have seen some ideas we have liked but are not achievable. One of these examples is the music video to 'A-Punk' by Vampire Weekend. This music video features the band in a simple setting but with the music video being sped up all the way through but with the artists and lip syncing also being in time with the music. We found that this would be too complicated to perform and we also do not have the technology to achieve this affect. However, we did fine a music video that is quite similar with some of the video being sped up in parts but not all the way trough. The music video to 'Always Like This' by Bombay Bicycle Club features a fast forward affect on an old T.V screen but only in short intervals of the video and also at parts when there is only instruments and no singing so there is no need for lip syncing. We have decided to take this idea and interpret it into our own music video in our own way as it is much more achievable and not too complicated.

Ideas/aims

Kasabian are a band we would consider our genre and I keep myself regularly updated with that they do through my own personal interest. Furthermore I feel this Instagram post was very relevant as it idolises what we might consider recreating in a studio setting. The setting they are at is probably out of our budget range but it gives a good idea of what we need to do to be a successful band.

Feedback Analysis

After receiving this feedback from our teacher on our first drat of the 25 Word Pitch I could see where we had gone wrong after looking at other pitches. Also, after overlooking the pitch that I had made I could understand that the point I wanted to make wasn't coming across very well. So, after looking at other pitches and asking advise from the teacher we, as a group, decided to start all over on different software and to put across our idea much better and clearer for other people viewing it to understand.

Inspiration

The reason we have chosen these videos for inspiration is fairly simple , firstly we have chosen the first three videos as they all have a similar set-up to what we want to achieve , all three have kept it very simple with the layout of their equipment , especially with " The Jam- Going Underground " as this video is just a white studio and the band with their instruments. The video is very basic and stripped back , but is so effective and works very well. We want to take two approaches when filming our video , a basic , simple approach in a studio firstly , but also adding something a bit different for a second approach to the video. The other two videos within the three are still very simplistic , but are slightly more advanced like " The Strypes - Hometown Girls " they have kept the basic equipment set-up but have took the setting to the next level by moving to an abandoned building and treating it as a studio which is very effective. For the other two videos there is a drastic change in the complexity as they require a lot more skill , after coming together we decided we like the concept of challenging ourselves with the second part to our video , and rather liked these two video ideas. With " Bombay Bicycle Club-Always Like This " they have played around with their footage , fast forwarding parts , playing parts normally and pausing parts which makes for a very good video. Also the little icons in the corner showing what the camera is doing gives the video a very retro feel , our problem being we do not have a sufficient old enough camera to achieve this look , so came to the conclusion that we would need to film our footage from a television to give the video the effects it needs. Also with " Vampire Weekend - A-Punk " this video is very very simple but when watching it looks very complicated but excellent to look at. Collectively as a group this was our favourite idea , but again for us has its difficulties. We would need to download our track into a music editing programme, then speed up the tempo of the track and save it , then do our performance at this speed but when it comes to creating the final video play our song at normal speed over the top so it looks as if everything has been sped up.If done well this idea could be very successful.

Other Texts

This is the music video to the song that we are going to do. We are doing something similar to his idea with the whole band being in a single coloured studio. However, we are going to change it up a bit as we are going to have cut aways to a different location to make the video more interesting.

Inhaler by Foals is a good example of what our band is going to look like in the music video with similar haircuts, clothing and style. We are basing our band around Foals and other similar bands.

We are going to base our music video in a small studio room with all there band in for the main parts of singing, like the chorus, and main guitar parts. It is simple yet affective in the music video. It does not illustrate the lyrics in anyway, however it amplifies all of the instruments and vocals seen in the shots.

Audience profile

The Uk tribe that we are mostly targeting with our music video is indie scenesters. They are best suited because they enjoy music that different and out there, also they enjoy listening to music. The clothes that they wear are very similar too what our band members will be wearing which is  skinny jeans and vintage clothing. They love discovering new artists and bands which means that they will enjoy looking at our band and listening to the music that they make.

Band Name/Biography

Hollow
Hollow are a young up and coming band of three members from a village called Narborough in Leicester. The band members are family friends and they have been driven by their parents to listen and enjoy indie/alternative music from a very young age. They have been brought up together and have attended festivals with their families since they were very young and now they intend to play at the festivals they love such as Reading and Leeds and Glastonbury. The band listen to artists such as The Courteeners, Peace, Bombay Bicycle Club and Jamie T. The reason behind the band name Hollow is that the band feel they are so dependent on their lives being revolved around music that they would feel hollow without it.

25 Word Pitch - DRAFT

Genre of music video

The genre of music we are going for is indie/ alternative rock. We have chose this genre of music because we enjoy this type of music and think that we could make a good music video for this type of genre. The song that we are using for our music video is Metronomy- The Look.
